Hey, Trevor Carlson here. Raising infants and toddlers can be tough. It’s even tougher to raise infants and toddlers who have suffered from some combination of neglect, abuse or drug exposure. These kids need extra love, support and structure to help them find success.

The quicker they find success and reach their developmental milestones the easier and more enjoyable your job as a foster parent will be. But even more importantly you will be setting them up to achieve success throughout the rest of their lives.

I was a foster parent for almost two years and a physical therapist for almost six years before I started figuring out what these children really need to help them thrive. It started after the realization that the calming techniques I was using for my infant foster daughter were actually the OPPOSITE of what she needed. In fact, based on her past drug exposure and personality, she actually needed me to rile her up to get her to calm down. By using traditional calming techniques I was unknowingly contributing to her fussiness and discontent.

Once I had this realization I spent a lot of time researching and then testing what I had learned through first hand experiences as a foster parent and as a pediatric physical therapist. This allowed me to figure out what works best for which kids to better serve my foster kids and physical therapy clients.

My goal with Success at 1,2,3 is to take this information and use it to help as many foster parents and kids as possible. Being a foster parent is not easy. The kids you raise come from circumstances that cause behaviors that are harder to deal with than what most other parents have to deal with. As you negotiate these behaviors there is the constant worry of, will I have an impact if they go back? And will this impact truly make a difference in their lives?

I want to help mitigate these fears as you see the positive impact you are having on your kids each day. I want you to be able to calm your kids more quickly when they get upset or come home from a visit. I want you to be able to see them soothe themselves, meet their own needs as much as possible and focus on learning instead of being upset and frustrated. I want your life to get better as you become a better foster parent by helping your child meet their needs.
